The Chicago Bears face a critical test before Sunday’s trip to Lambeau Field. Their top two running backs, D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai, both sat out Wednesday practice with nagging injuries. This absence creates a genuine worry for a team that relies heavily on its ground game to protect quarterback Tyson Bagent. The situation is far from ideal with Green Bay waiting.

Workload Takes Its Toll on Monangai

Kyle Monangai just played the biggest game of his young career against the New York Jets. He rushed 30 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns in the 23-12 victory. That massive effort has clearly left a mark on his body. Head coach Ben Johnson downplayed the thumb injury but admitted the physical toll is real. “Ben Johnson said Kyle Monangai’s thumb is ‘not an issue,’ but that his body is feeling the effects of his workload against the Jets,” per reports. Johnson added, “He had 30 carries and he feels like he had 30 carries.” The coach’s words confirm that Monangai is sore, even if the thumb itself is fine. Managing his touches this week will be key.

Swift’s Fumbles Raise Red Flags

D’Andre Swift is dealing with hip and knee issues that have plagued him all season. His injury report status is concerning, but his ball security is an even bigger problem. Swift has committed two fumbles since Week 2, a trend the coach finds unacceptable. “Ben Johnson said D’Andre Swift’s 2 fumbles since Week 2 [are] ‘very uncharacteristic,'” according to reports. Johnson specifically called the slip against the Jets “egregious.” He noted, “It’s one that we can’t have. There’s too many times when the ball’s getting away from our body and he knows that.” Swift has always been a tough runner, but losing the ball is a luxury the Bears cannot afford against a tough Packers defense.

Thursday Report Will Decide Sunday Status

The entire offensive line also struggled on Wednesday, with three starters missing practice due to injuries. Joe Thuney, Jonah Jackson, and Darnell Wright were all listed as did not practice. This lack of depth puts extra pressure on the running backs to be ready. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune noted the high snap count from the previous game might be the cause. If they are not, Roschon Johnson steps in, but the drop-off in talent is steep. The team needs its stars on the field to keep their 4-1 record alive.
