The Chicago Bears safety room just got a lot thinner, and the timeline for a fix remains murky at best. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Coby Bryant will miss eight to ten weeks due to a hyperextended knee, bone bruise, and small fracture. No surgery is needed, but the recovery clock starts now. Head coach Ben Johnson pushed back hard on that specific timeline when asked this morning. “I don’t know where you guys got that; hasn’t been said here,” Johnson said. He promised to share details only once the medical staff confirms the full scope of the injury.

Gordon Remains in Limbo

The news does not stop with Bryant. An update is still lacking for Kyler Gordon, who began training camp listed as Active/Physically Unable to Perform. Johnson confirmed that Gordon is simply continuing to rehab his calf injury. This means the Bears are down two key defensive backs who were expected to be vital parts of Dennis Allen’s scheme. The lack of clarity from the coaching staff is frustrating for a fan base that needs to know who will step in. Until the team speaks, the secondary remains a question mark.

Who Steps Into the Void

With Bryant out and Elijah Hicks already on the PUP list, the burden falls on Cam Lewis. Since 2019, Lewis played for the Buffalo Bills before signing a free agent deal this March. He brings experience with 76 career games and 14 starts under his belt. He has played both safety and nickel, which helps his case. The rest of the depth chart looks shaky at best. Gervarrius Owens spent last year on the practice squad and has just one defensive snap from 2023 to 2024. Anthony Johnson Jr. missed the 2025 season entirely due to injury. Skyler Thomas is a rookie undrafted free agent from Oregon State who has never played a down in the NFL. Coby Bryant’s $40 Million Injury Is Not a Career End covers the wider picture.

The Real Risk for Chicago

The Bears might try to sign a veteran like Jabrill Peppers or Taylor Rapp, but that is a gamble. Per @PFN365, those are the top available options, yet the team could also ride with what they have. The loss of Bryant is significant because he was a starter before the injury. If Lewis struggles, the defense could crumble in the secondary. The coaching staff needs to ramp up T.J. Edwards quickly to help fill the communication gap. Johnson noted that Edwards’ presence and voice were good to see on the field. But a linebacker cannot cover a safety position forever. The next few weeks will define the season’s defensive identity. Can the Bears survive without their top two safeties? The answer lies in the performance of the backups.
