Bears Want Pass Rusher, But Chargers Won’t Trade Mack

NFL insider Jordan Schultz says the Bears need a pass rusher, but ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Chargers will not trade Khalil Mack.

The White Sox sit in the basement while the Tampa Bay Rays just stole a piece of the puzzle they actually need. This trade marks a stark reversal for Freddy Peralta, moving from a disastrous tenure in New York to a rotation that is already the best in the American League. It is a hard pill to swallow for South Side fans who know what it looks like when a team gives up on a starter.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Freddy Peralta is not the pitcher he was a year ago, and the Mets knew it. ESPN MLB STL reports Peralta’s current season marks his worst performance, featuring a 4.99 ERA across 22 starts. In 11 of those appearances, he could not reach the sixth inning. His strikeout rate has tumbled from 28.2% last season to 22.1% this season, and his whiff rate has plummeted as well. These are not small dips; they are a full collapse of the skills that made him a top-five Cy Young voter just last year.

The Mets were desperate to move him, and they did. After trading Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat for him the previous offseason, the team released him once more following a single poor year, per ESPN MLB STL. Now, the Rays get him for three minor leaguers, including outfielder Aidan Smith and infielder Emilien Pitre. The Mets are 47-65 and clearly looking to cut losses before the season ends. With his $8 million team option for 2026 exercised, Peralta was released by the club, making him a free agent once the season concludes. Tampa Bay Builds While Chicago Waits

While the White Sox watch from the sidelines, the Rays are stacking talent to hold off the Yankees and Red Sox in the AL East. According to Lone Star Ball (SBN Rangers), the Rays already have the best record in the American League. Adding Peralta gives them a rotation with Drew Rasmussen, Shane McClanahan, and Nick Martinez. Both Rasmussen and Martinez have sub-3 ERAs among the Rays’ starters.

Shane McClanahan has a 3.09 ERA, though he is currently on the injured list. Even with that injury, the Rays have the depth to absorb Peralta’s struggles if he continues his slide. The White Sox have nothing to show for their recent rebuild other than a roster full of holes. This trade proves that smart teams find value where others see trash, and Chicago is missing the boat entirely.
