The Chicago Bears beat the New England Patriots 30-24 on Thursday night, but the score line does not tell the whole story. The team moved their record to 5-2 on the season. Left guard Joe Thuney believes the secret to this success is a group of players who put the team above themselves. He spoke to reporters after the game about the vibe in the locker room.
Quarterback Caleb Williams threw for 300 yards for the second game in a row. Luther Burden III and Rome Odunze delivered significant plays at wide receiver, as tight end Colston Loveland also performed well. This is the first instance this season where all three skill players excelled in one game.
A Group That Plays for Each Other
Thuney sees a special bond forming on this unit. He knows that when the ball is moving, everyone has a chance to help. “Everyone plays for each other, making plays for each other,” said left guard Joe Thuney, according to Yahoo Sports. He added that the chemistry is rare and something he enjoys. “It’s a really unselfish team. I love being a part of it,” Thuney said.
Burden caught four passes for 130 yards and a touchdown in just the first half. Loveland led the team with 12 targets, his second-highest career total, for 69 yards and a score. Even though Odunze started slow and dropped a pass, he finished with four catches for 69 yards and recovered an onside kick to seal the win. Running back D’Andre Swift also had a solid night with 78 rushing yards and a touchdown.
The Trick Play That Went Wrong
Not every play went according to plan, but the effort was there. On a second-and-3 from the New England 8-yard line, head coach Ben Johnson called a trick play. The ball was handed off to Thuney, an 11-year veteran who has never run the ball or caught a pass in his career. An illegal forward handoff nullified the play.
Thuney admitted he did not know the call would be flagged until after the fact. He had fun with the moment even though it did not count. “Just kind of work on it here and there, kind of as a, ‘who knows’ play and heard it in the huddle, so let’s go,” Thuney said, according to Yahoo Sports. He laughed about the penalty. “… I guess they said forward handoff or something. So, gotta go look at it. It was fun but illegal, I guess,” Thuney said.
Cole Kmet, the tight end, recorded three receptions totaling 28 yards but exited in the fourth quarter due to a season-ending knee injury.
With the Thursday night game in the books, the Bears now have a short break before their next challenge. They will face the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night in their Week 8 matchup. This win improves the team to 2-0 in prime-time games this season. They are also 3-0 when they score at least 30 points, a streak that has occurred in every game Caleb Williams has started and finished.
