The Cubs bullpen is getting a familiar arm back, but don’t go expecting a new closer. The news of Palencia’s return to the bullpen is a solid win for roster depth. However, the move doesn’t change the late-inning hierarchy. He isn’t stepping into that ninth-inning role just yet.
Depth matters for the bullpen
Adding arms is always a good thing when you are trying to stabilize the middle innings. While he won’t be the guy to shut the door in the ninth, having more options helps the staff manage long games. It is all about building that bridge to the end of the game.
Iowa Cubs find late wins
The minor league level is showing plenty of grit right now. Per Bleed Cubbie Blue, the Iowa Cubs managed to beat the Toledo Mud Hens 5-4 in a ten-inning battle. It was a wild one. James Triantos saved the day with a game-tying double that nearly went out of the park. He finished the night 1 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base.
Chas McCormick also played a huge part in that victory. He went 3 for 5 and hit two doubles. One of those doubles drove in a run and helped set the stage for the win. Even the pitching staff showed strength. Eduarniel Nuñez earned the win after pitching the eighth and ninth innings. He allowed only one hit and struck out three players.
Knoxville shows high scoring power
The Knoxville Smokies are also finding ways to win, even if the results are mixed. They split a doubleheader against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. The first game was a blowout, ending in a 16-5 win for the Smokies. After yielding six hits and five runs across four innings, Connor Schultz secured the victory by taking the mound. He also recorded four strikeouts.
The second game was a different story. The Smokies lost the seven-inning nightcap by a score of 6-1. Dawson Netz started the first game but only finished one inning before the rain forced a delay.
