The Chicago Bears needed a spark in their preseason. They found one in a third-round pick who some thought would never play. Zavion Thomas made his NFL debut count. He did not just show up. He took over the field in a way that had fans screaming. On the very first offensive snap, he broke a double move and caught a pass. Then he ran 97 yards for a score. This play turned a “reach” in the draft into a steal for the team.

A Speed That Changes Everything

Thomas ran a 4.28-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. That speed is real and it scares defenses. Ben Johnson, the Bears coach, noted in June that Thomas was making a play nearly every day. He said the team could have a “big weapon” if they used that speed well. Saturday was the first time fans saw that weapon in action. He did not just outrun defenders. Deep within his own territory, he generated separation via his route to secure the reception. Once he had the ball, nobody could catch him.

Thomas concluded the opening half with five receptions totaling 140 yards plus a touchdown. He also returned a punt for 39 yards. He sat out the rest of the game after that. This was not a fluke. It was a statement. For a player some projected as a seventh-round pick, this was the perfect start. He has studied former Bear Devin Hester. The comparison is already happening around Chicago. According to reports, Hester stands as the most exceptional return specialist in history. Now he wants to be one too.

More Than Just a Receiver

The Bears have a crowded room at wide receiver. Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III, Kalif Raymond, and Jahdae Walker are all fighting for spots. Thomas was not drafted to sit on the bench. His speed gives the offense a different look. He can stretch the field and change the game in a flash. The special teams element is huge too. A returner who can score from anywhere is rare. The team needs that kind of big-play ability to win close games.

Veteran linebacker T.J. Edwards also played in the finale against the Titans. He has been a key piece since joining in 2023. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Edwards played two series with second-stringers. He led the team with five tackles in that time. His presence helps the defense stay steady while the rookies learn. The Bears will go into the season with Edwards and Devin Bush as starters. But the offense is where the excitement lives right now.

Thomas showed he can separate and score. He showed he can return punts. He showed he belongs. The Bears have a lot of talent. They need someone to make the big play when it matters. Thomas might be that guy. If he stays healthy, the offense could be dangerous. The 97-yard touchdown was just the beginning.
