The Chicago White Sox have a narrow window to fix their pitching, but the market is shifting beneath their feet. Tarik Skubal is likely to shatter every record for a pitcher with a deal worth eight years and $355 million, according to ESPN. That number is the average of 27 projections from insiders polled by Kiley McDaniel. It is a massive sum that could drain the payroll for years to come. The 2026-27 free agent class is considered one of the weakest in a decade. They need help, but the top tier of the market is priced out of reach.

The Skubal Health Question

Skubal will be 30 in 2027 and posted a 2.72 ERA with 186 strikeouts this season. His stats are elite, yet his medical history raises red flags for a long-term commitment. He had Tommy John surgery in college and elbow surgery in 2022. He even underwent a procedure in May to remove loose bodies from his elbow. That minimally invasive surgery allowed him to pitch at a Cy Young level for the rest of the season. The White Sox cannot ignore this risk. The team paid a record price for an arm with three past surgeries.

The Peralta Pivot

Chasing Skubal might be a mistake when better value exists elsewhere. The White Sox need starting pitchers and position players more than anything else, says Yahoo Sports. While the market has more starting pitching talent than outfielders, the best position players like Randy Arozarena are still available. Pursuing Freddy Peralta makes more sense than betting the farm on Skubal. Yahoo Sports notes that going after Peralta or Michael King while also targeting top position players is a tall order. The team has six players entering free agency, including pitchers Erick Fedde and Sean Newcomb, per Sports Mockery. Newcomb threw 90.1 innings with a 3.09 ERA last season, per Sports Mockery. The Sox must find a way to fill holes without breaking the bank on one risky arm.

The collective bargaining agreement expires at 11:59 p.m. ET on Dec 1. They have to weigh the cost of a $355 million contract against the need for immediate depth. If they overspend on Skubal, they might lose out on the position players they also need.
