The plan for Alex Bregman to face his former team at Fenway Park just got scrapped. He will most likely miss the series against the Boston Red Sox after taking a foul ball to the face. This bad luck happened on Sunday during a game in Cincinnati, not Boston. The foul ball struck him while he stood in the on-deck circle warming up for his turn at bat.

The injury is worse than a simple bruise. Bregman suffered multiple facial fractures, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Michael Busch’s bat launched the ball directly into the third baseman’s cheek. A trainer accompanied him as he descended the dugout stairs, face buried in his hands. The Cubs sent him straight to the hospital after the game to get checked out.

No Surgery, But No Certainty

Doctors decided he will not undergo surgery to fix the breaks. Yet that choice does not mean the bones do not need attention. Bregman is hopeful to return in the playoffs, but the timeline looks shaky. According to reports, extensive damage may prevent him from recovering before the postseason.

Photos shared by the player show just how bad the hit was. An image revealed his face with a bloodied cheek and a black eye swollen shut. By the following morning, the left side of his face had become entirely swollen. Craig Counsell, the Chicago manager, stated Bregman suffered a hit to the left cheekbone below his eye, resulting in a bleeding nose.

Fenway Park Might Wait Too Long

The Red Sox series is a key moment for any fan who follows the sport. Seeing Bregman play against the team he once knew would have been a special story. Instead, the Cubs star faces a long road to recovery. Although no diagnosis exists yet, predicting a timely return for Bregman from this injury seems difficult.

The timing makes the loss of the Fenway series even more painful. His playoff spot is uncertain, and he will likely miss the series at Fenway Park. The team won the game 9-1 over the Reds, but the victory feels hollow without their star third baseman.
