The Chicago Bears shouldn’t be sad to see Marcus Davenport go. It is time to stop chasing the ghosts of what this veteran edge rusher used to be. The team officially moved on from him this week. According to reports, the release from the practice squad was “a transaction made at his request.”
Davenport has a massive resume, but his recent years have been a disaster for his health. He once had a career-best nine sacks in 2021. However, injuries have haunted him since then.
Focusing on the pass rush plan
The Bears defense is actually working well right now. They just dominated the Jets in a 23-12 win. Coach Ben Johnson noted that the team’s rush plan has been outstanding. He stated that, regardless of whether they are rushing four or applying pressure, the players are currently collaborating effectively at a high pace. This group is finding ways to hit the quarterback without needing a pure superstar who is constantly in the training room.
The defense is also killing teams on third down. The Bears currently rank second in the NFL in this area. They have held opponents to a 23.7% conversion rate through the first four games. This success comes from the group working together rather than relying on one individual.
According to Mike Florio from PFT, Davenport is being released to sign with another team; he’s planning on retiring.
Moving forward without the veteran
Davenport’s departure doesn’t hurt the roster depth as much as people think. He only saw one tackle on 12 snaps during his recent season debut on Sunday. The Bears are clearly prioritizing efficiency and availability. Johnson said, “We talk about the No. 1 factor being the pass-game efficiency on both sides of the ball.
The team is already finding success with the players they have. The defense held the Jets to just seven first downs and zero third-down conversions. There is no reason to clog the practice squad with a veteran who wants out. The focus stays on the next big test against Green Bay.
