The vibe in Chicago is shifting, driven less by the new faces or big draft picks and more by a change in how the veterans view the room. For a long time, the standard felt stuck, but now the energy feels different because the leadership has evolved. Jaylon Johnson is feeling that shift personally. The veteran cornerback is looking for a big year, and he is clearly locked in. According to Yahoo Sports, a recent talk between Johnson and head coach Ben Johnson changed everything for the defender. That kind of talk is rare in this building.

A Super Bowl standard

Most coaches play it safe with their words, sticking to talk about competing or playing hard, but Ben Johnson does not do that. Johnson told the players something they have not heard in a long time. “Honestly, we had a talk and I would say of my years being here, I’ve never had a talk of a coach saying we have a chance to win a Super Bowl,” Johnson said, per Yahoo Sports. That is a massive claim that carries a heavy burden, since you cannot just say those words and expect results without the work. But for Johnson, it worked. He said that specific conversation put things into perspective and sparked a level of competition in him that he has not felt since he arrived in Chicago.

The vision for Caleb Williams

While the defense gets the early headlines, the coach is dreaming about the whole roster, not just the defensive unit. The vision for the offense is just as bold, with reports indicating Johnson is already looking at how Caleb Williams can take the next step. He even admitted that thinking about the quarterback’s potential gives him goosebumps. He wants precision and he wants the offense to be a powerhouse, specifically pushing for a 70% completion rate from Williams. Last year, the quarterback posted a 58.1% completion rate, so that is a huge gap to close. If Williams can master the system, the Bears could actually stack wins.

The work ahead

Believing is easy, but doing the work is the hard part. The Bears have to build on the 11-win season they had last year while dealing with injuries too. Xavier Woods is already on the injury list with a groin injury, which makes the secondary even more of a question mark for Week 1. The team has to prove that this new energy translates to the field when the pads come on.
