You would never guess a guy from the Bahamas is about to tear up the lineup for the Cubs. Most fans fixate on the big names when “roster expansion” hits the news cycle, but the real story belongs to BJ Murray Jr., a 26-year-old switch-hitter making a historic jump before Tuesday. The North Siders are bringing him up a day early just to get his feet wet in the big league vibe. Pete Crow-Armstrong even showed him the ropes to the indoor cage at Wrigley Field on Monday night. This is a debut for a player who has been grinding for six seasons.
A Rare Spot in Cubs History
When Murray steps onto the field, he becomes only the second player from the Bahamas ever to suit up for Chicago. Andre Rodgers was the first, playing for the team back in the early 1960s. That makes it a tiny club, and Murray just earned his spot on the list. He is also the 10th person born in the Bahamas to reach the Major Leagues at all. That is a huge deal for a country that does not usually send many players to the show. The Bahamas Baseball Association was the first to break the news that he was on his way up. Cubs manager Craig Counsell made it clear this was no accident. “BJ is going to be active tomorrow,” he said right before Monday’s game against the Brewers. The team wants him ready to go when the roster rules change.
Why He Fits Right Now
Chicago needs a bat that can hit from both sides of the plate. Murray does exactly that while playing first base, third base, and even some outfield. He hits .294 with 16 homers and 9 steals this year according to MLB Trade Rumors. That kind of production is hard to find on a bench. The team has Michael Busch at first and Alex Bregman at third, so there is no starting job waiting for him. But he can slide in whenever the regulars need a rest. He is a savvy baserunner who adds value even if his speed is not elite. That makes him a perfect fit for a playoff push. He was drafted in the 15th round back in 2021. Now he ranks No. 19 on the Cubs’ prospect list. He has played in big games before, including the 2023 Futures Game. He even represented Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic twice.
To familiarize himself and survey the terrain, Counsell explained they arrived one day earlier than planned. “He’s had a tremendous Minor League season,” the manager noted, adding that Murray has done great and has put himself into a conversation for a while now. “So, I’m happy for him,” Counsell said. Teams can add one more position player and a pitcher when rosters expand to 28 players on Tuesday. The Cubs have an open spot on the 40-man roster for Murray to fill.
