The Chicago Bulls just sent a loud message to their 2024 lottery pick. By signing Norman Powell to a two-year deal, the front office made it clear they do not see Matas Buzelis as their number one option. This move tells us exactly where the team stands heading into the 2026-27 season.
Buzelis averaged 18.8 points and took 14.8 shots per game after the trade deadline, yet his efficiency dropped significantly in that expanded role. His field goal percentage fell to 44.8 percent and his three-point shooting slipped to 32.9 percent when he tried to carry the offense. The Bulls clearly want to avoid the relegation zone, so they brought in a proven scorer who can handle the load.
The Powell Decision Speaks Volumes
Chicago had cap space to sign anyone but chose to spend the majority on Powell and a trade for Nicolas Claxton. Getting an All-Star for $22.5 million was great business, but it shows the team does not think Buzelis is ready to be the go-to guy. Powell has averaged over 21 points per game for two straight years and just made his first All-Star appearance. He is a bucket-getter who will take over 15 shots per game.
The Bulls aren’t wrong to worry about Buzelis taking on that primary role too soon. His efficiency dropped significantly in the expanded role he played earlier this season. The 21-year-old has a versatile skill set, but the path forward likely sees him as the number three offensive option on a title contender rather than the main man.
Buzelis Admits The Hard Truth
Buzelis himself is learning the business side of the game fast. During a podcast with Lonzo Ball, the young forward spoke plainly about the recent changes in the organization. “I just found out about the business side of basketball. It’s a lot different,” Matas Buzelis said regarding the front office shakeup and coaching changes.
Lonzo Ball did not sugarcoat his take on how the former coach treated the young forward. Ball noted that Buzelis “got game, bro. But like he was put, when I was over there. He was on a leash, unfortunately,” according to the conversation reported by Pippen Ain’t Easy. That leash kept Buzelis from fully showing his potential, but now the team is looking for a different path.
A New Coach Could Change The Game
New head coach Tiago Splitter might be the key to unlocking Buzelis’ true talent. Buzelis mentioned he wants to train with Deni Avdija over the summer and is already in contact with the Portland forward. Avdija attacks the rim more, which is exactly the type of downhill offense Splitter wants to apply to Buzelis’ game.
There is no shame in being the third option on a winning team. Players like OG Anunoby and Chet Holmgren made huge defensive impacts while playing that role. If everything breaks right, Buzelis could find that same spot. The Bulls want to avoid the relegation zone and they clearly see Matas as more of a tertiary offensive option than the go-to.
