Phil Maton is looking at a longer absence than the Cubs hoped. Craig Counsell told reporters this week that Maton, placed on the injured list Monday with right knee tendinitis, had undergone an MRI and that the “news is not great.” Chicago is seeking additional opinions, and whether surgery enters the conversation is not yet clear.
This is Maton’s third trip to the IL this season. The first two read as precautionary from the outside. This one does not.
The knee is not a new problem. Maton dealt with the same issue in the second half of last season with Texas, and he has said he reworked his mechanics to take load off it. Whatever that adjustment bought him has not held up across a full year in Chicago.
That history is the uncomfortable part for the front office. Maton’s numbers last season gave Jed Hoyer’s group plenty to like, and the contract looked like solid value at the time. A recurring knee issue that predates the signing raises a fair question about how closely it was examined during the offseason.
Maton raised the possibility of surgery himself earlier this year. He described the condition as chronic, said he would like it addressed once the offseason arrives so he stops managing it in-season, and left the medical judgment to the club’s staff.
The deadline math just got simpler
Whatever the additional opinions come back with, the roster conclusion is already visible. Chicago needs another proven high-leverage arm, and it needs one before the deadline.
The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma pointed to Antoine Kelly and Eduarniel Nuñez as the internal candidates to absorb innings in the meantime. Both arrived in smaller moves earlier this season and profile as bridge options rather than answers.
Monday’s loss to Detroit made the argument in real time. Fewer than two weeks remain before the deadline.
